Obituary for Thomas R. Moreen

Slingerlands - Thomas R. Moreen passed away on Mother's Day, May 13, 2018 and entered eternal life where he will continue to enjoy life as he did on earth for 95 years. Tom was born in Salina, Kansas, July 8th, 1922, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip O. Moreen. Tom spent his childhood on a farm near Hedville, Kansas, with a population of 15. He attended his early schooling in a one room house where his oldest sister was his teacher. Tom graduated from Kansas State University in January 1948. While attending Kansas State University, he was member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was business manager of the college year book.

Tom entered the service in 1943 where he was a pilot in the Army Air Corp, assigned to the troop carrier command where he was first pilot on both the C-47 and the C-46. He held an instrument rating on both airplanes. Upon receiving his wings, Tom was commissioned a flight officer and later 2nd Lieutenant. He was trained in dropping air born troopers, supplies and towing gliders. Prior to leaving the service, he received his unlimited multi-engine commercial pilot's license. Upon graduating from college, he joined Aetna Life & Casualty Company, Casualty Division, retiring in March of 1983 as General Manager in New York for twenty-four years.

Tom was active in many organizations. He served as President of the Insurance Manager's Association in Northeastern, New York, United Way, Red Cross joint appeals, and as President of the Albany Rotary Club (which had 295 active members) and where Tom was a Paul Harris fellow. He was a member of the Albany Country Club, Fort Orange Club, Delmar Lutheran Church, Chairman of the Salvation Army Board, Vice Chairman of the Albany Institute of History and Art where he also ran their first financial campaign. He was asked in 1972 to head the Republican Campaign for the Capital Region to elect Richard Nixon president which included fifteen counties, which he had to turn down for business reasons. Tom was an active member of the Albany Power Squadron where he was an active pilot and their communications officer for many years.

Tom was married to Betty Jane Troxell, deceased, for sixty-four wonderful years. They had three wonderful children, James P. Moreen, (Denise) of Fayetteville ,New York,Thomas R. Moreen Junior (Shelly) of Crawfordville, Florida and Barbara Jeanette Whitten, deceased. Tom leaves seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a sister, Betty Larsen of Dickinson, North Dakota.

Tom and his wife traveled extensively around the world. They spent many winters on Marco Island and summers on their boat, the "MOREENA" on beautiful Lake George.

Memorial Services will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran church, 85 Elm Street, Delmar, NY at 11 am on Friday, May 25, 20018. He will be interned at the Bethlehem Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
