Obituary for Steven E. Johnson

Albany - Steven E. Johnson, Sept. 21, 2017

Steve died after the recent spread of his pancreatic cancer, following his April 2016 diagnosis.  He would want to be remembered for his family (ex-wife but close friend, Judith Grose-Johnson, daughter Carol, son Eric, daughter-in-law Sharon, and his two granddaughters Isabella and Jacque Brielle), as well as his assorted extended family, his friends (especially Donna Dolan and Judi Tricillo Jones) and his commitment to the community.  After pursuing careers as a land surveyor, a counselor for disturbed youths, and publishing one of the first local gay publications "Capital District Alive," he found his calling and niche as the owner of the independent movie rental stores "Video Central,"  "Deja View" and "GPA Video" and the independent bookstore "Lifestyle Books."  He maintained his commitment to the community through his business operations as well as his contributions and support to local groups

After his retirement, he turned his focus towards his neighborhood community and became involved in the neighborhood watch, the neighborhood association and the local community garden.  Throughout it all, he maintained an avid interest in nature to include birdwatching, flower gardening and creating a peaceful nature retreat in his back yard which included establishing a 250 gallon Koi pond in his back yard.  He even found the time to open his home to care for several rescue dogs, cats and the occasional wildlife in need.

We thank the staff of the Cancer Care Center at St. Peter's Hospital, Michael Conley, ANP, Ph.D. of Landmark Medical and Four Corners Pharmacy for care they provided during his illness and the support during arduous treatment.

Friends, family and neighbors are invited to stop by Steve's for an "open house" on October 14, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Steve's memory may be sent to Rottie Empire Rescue at ( or PAWS (
