Obituary for Dr. Harvey Bernard

Dr. Harvey Bernard, 92, died peacefully at the Eddy, Cohoes, NY on November 13, 2017. Dr. Bernard was born in St. Louis, MO, on June 30, 1925, to Rolland and Ernestine Bernard. He graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, MO in 1947. Dr. Bernard performed the first peritoneal dialysis at Barnes Hospital at Washington University in 1948.

Dr. Bernard married his wife, Patricia H. Dahms of St. Louis on January 10, 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of Surgery, 1951-1953, at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. Upon returning to St. Louis, he was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Washington University Medical School until 1963. Dr. Bernard worked in Algeria on the Washington University Medical School CARE-MEDICO team. He also worked in London, England from 1964 to 1965 under a United States Public Health Service Fellowship.

Dr. Bernard and his wife Patricia, and their three children; David, Craig and Robin moved to Glenmont, NY in 1966, when he was recruited by Dr. Charles Eckert, to Albany Medical Center/College until his retirement in 1990. Dr. Bernard also served as a surgeon at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Albany, NY and as Medical Director, Office of Medicaid Management, NYS Department of Health, retiring in 2010.

Harvey was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, and scuba diving. He was an accomplished sailor, sailing throughout the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands. He and his wife, "Patsy" enjoyed extensive travel on all of the continents. Harvey and his family also spent many summers enjoying their home on Kattskill Bay, Lake George.

Harvey is survived by his daughter Robin Bernard Skaskiw, her husband Kevin Skaskiw, and their son Sean Skaskiw of Clifton Park, NY; his son Craig Bernard and his wife Jodi Bernard and her two children Caleb Meroski and Sarah (Meroski) Nabozny of Fort Ann, NY. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia, his son David and his brother, Bruce Bernard of St. Louis, MO.

Harvey never waivered in the unconditional love he showed his friends and family. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.
